Hey June Top

The last few months have been such a transition.

I feel like I have more time, but the days just fly by.

I have no idea where May went....it's JUNE - already??

Having more time at home is giving us makers lots of time to think and 

the design process is much different.

At least for me.

I know we all have our preferences with fibre and hook sizes, so I thought...

why not design a pattern that will give YOU the choice!?

I made two versions of the Hey June Top.

You decide what mood you're in, or make both!

Let me tell you a little about each version.

The Hey June Top using WORSTED:

I used CHROMA TWIST from We Crochet.

Fiber: 70% Superwash Wool, 30% Nylon
Hook size: 4.25mm
Yards: 198/Grams:100

This yarn is a dream to work with!  It's a stunning 2-ply twist: each yarn play is dyed individually before it's spun together, every skein is will be different.  The yarn is sturdy and soft with a thick -and-thin strand that resembles handspun yarn.

The Hey June Top using COTTON:

I used CotLin from We Crochet

Fiber: 70% Tanguis Cotton, 30% Linen
Hook size: 5mm
Yards: 123/Grams:50

This has to be one of my favourite yarns right now.  I love designing with cotton, it's my favourite fibre for the warmer months.
This Summer linen has a strong fiber, the Tanguis cotton makes it durable, wearable, and so soft.  It will get softer with each wash!

Let's get into the pattern(s):
For a beginner, this pattern might look challenging but I can assure you it's beginner friendly.
The top is made up of two identical square panels that work up very quickly.
Once it's seamed together, the sleeve ruffles are added.
It can be easily adjusted to size, follow instructions below to make your GAUGE SWATCH, once you measure the length of your swatch you will be able to determine how wide your panels should be and how long your initial chain will be.

Making your GAUGE SWATCH:

Choose your fibre and your hook size.
Note: beginning chain of every row counts as first stitch

Ch 16
Row 1: Ch 4. 3DC in 4th ch from the hook. Skip 2. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Skip 2. 5DC in next.  Skip 2. SC, ch 1, SC. (4 stitches remain). 3DC in last.

Row 2: Ch 2. DC in next 4 sts. Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in next (DC will be in top of 5DC cluster).  Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in the last 6 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1. SC in next 2 stitches. Ch 5. Skip 5. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Ch 5 Sk 5. SC in last 2 sts.

Row 4:  Ch 2. DC in next 4 sts. Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in next.  Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in the next 5 sts.

Now measure your swatch's length.
This will determine how tight/loose your tension is and will give you a better idea on how much your initial chain should be.

For example:
The length of your swatch is 5"
Now measure the length of the widest part of your upper body, let's say: 18"
Add 2" to the number to give a 1" ease on each side  = 20" (you can add as much ease as you'd like)
You will need to make your 5" swatch 4 times: (5" swatch x 4 = 20")

Your 5" swatch had an initial chain of 16.
And your initial chain MUST be a multiple of 16.
So your initial chain would now be:
Chain of 16 x 4 swatches = chain of 64
Initial chain: 64

OTH Crochet Nook Pattern: Hey June Top

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Materials: (quantity is based on the size I made)
2 x Chroma Twist in Go Go Boots
Hook: Size G [4.25 mm] crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
or
3 x CotLin in Swan

Hook: Size H [5 mm] crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge:

Chroma Twist: 17sts x 9rows = 4" x 4"
CotLin: 14 sts x 6 rows = 4" x 4"

My finished size:
Chroma Twist: Length 16"/Width 16"
CotLin: Length 18"/Width 18"

Abbreviations:

CH = Chain(s)

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet
TR = Triple Crochet
SK = Skip stitch

ST(S) = stitch(es)

Instructions:

The instructions are written for size S.  If changes are necessary to make a larger size, make sure to complete your gauge swatch, as instructed above, to calculate how wide your panels should be.

BACK panel and FRONT panel (make alike):

*ch at the beginning of every row counts as first stitch

Ch 64

Row 1: Ch 4. 3DC in 4th ch from the hook. *Skip 2. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Skip 2. 5DC in next. Repeat from * until 3 stitches remain. Skip 2. 4DC in last st.

Row 2: Ch 2. DC in next 4 sts. *Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in next. Ch 3. Skip 3. DC in the next 9 sts. Repeat from * until 5 stitches remain. DC in last 5 sts.

Row 3: Ch 1. SC in next 2 stitches. *Ch 5. Skip 5. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Repeat from * until last 2 stitches remain. SC in last 2 sts.

Row 4: same as Row 2

Row 5: Ch 2. 3DC. *Skip 2. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Skip 2. 5DC in next. Repeat from * until 3 stitches remain. Skip 2. 4DC in last st.

Row 6: Ch 6. Skip 3. *DC in the next 9 sts. Ch 3, Sk 3. DC in next. Ch 3. Sk 3. Repeat from * until 4 sts remain. Skip 3. DC in last st.

Row 7: Ch 1. SC in the next 2.*Ch 5. Skip 5. SC in next st. Ch 1. Sk 1. SC in next st. Repeat from * until last 2 stitches remain. SC in last 2 sts.

Row 8: same as Row 6

Row 9: same as Row 5

*Repeat Rows 1 - 9 until desired length is reached.

Next: DC in every stitch until the end, sl st, fasten off.

Shaping Shoulders:
Now attach yarn to the first stitch.
DC for 12 stitches. Turn.
Next: Ch 2, DC in last 11 stitches. Sl St and fasten off

(do the same on the other side of the panel)
Attach yarn to the first stitch on the opposite side
DC for 12 stitches. Turn.
Next: Ch 2, DC in last 11 stitches. Sl St and fasten off

Seaming Panels together:
Lay both panels on top of each other.
Seam the shoulders together.
Now seam along each side (I seamed only 7" on each side bottom up, leaving a nice wide sleeve opening)

Ruffle Sleeves:
Attach yarn to sleeve opening.
*3TR in every stitch. Ch 2.
Repeat from* until sleeve is complete.

Weave in your ends and you're done!
